DISASTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE FUND

The Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) ensures rapid and effective response to emergencies and crises. Every year, small and medium-sized disasters often occur in silence, without the attention of the mainstream media. Without visibility or attention beyond the local region in which they occur, these silent disasters often do not receive the influx of financial support that can follow large-scale emergencies or disasters. To support these smaller emergencies or disasters, or to provide initial funding before emergency appeals are launched for large-scale disasters, the Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC)secretariat allocates raised funds from its Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) to district centres to support their operations.

What is the Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF)?

The Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) was established by the Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) to provide immediate financial support to district centres, enabling them to carry out their unique role as first responders after a disaster.

The Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) is available to all 10 district centres of the Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) and has two main purposes:

  • Start-up funding for the Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) to respond to small and large-scale disasters.
  • Funding for Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) district centres responses to small, medium and large-scale disasters and health emergencies for which no international appeal will be launched or when support from other actors is not foreseen - the "grant facility".

All requests for Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) allocations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Money can be authorized and released within 24 hours.

How is the Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) funded?

Funds for Disaster Emergency Response Fund (DERF) are sought through monthly and annual appeals. This allows the Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) to maintain the necessary balance of funds to meet the requests for support.

The Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) activated the Community Disaster Emergency Appeal Rapid Response Fund to help those directly impacted by COVID-19 in addressing their ongoing needs. 100% of the donations to this fund will benefit communities in Western province of Zambia.
